On Apr 22, 2010, an oil rig owned by British Petroleum exploded, killing 11 people and injuring many. There have been 26,000 claims from victims who state, among other things, that British Petroleum knowingly operated an oil rig that did not perform up to industry standards. Workers on the rig reported that they noticed that the well was not working as it should. They passed this information on to their supervisors. The supervisors noted this and still continued on.
According to media sources, employees on the rig informed their supervisors that the rig was not performing well. This information was ignored, and with dire consequences. As if British Petroleum's negligence and the resulting deaths were not bad enough, there is now another concern; the effect the oil will have on the environment. Already there have been reports of contaminated habitats and injured wildlife. With all these issues, and the fact that as many as 19,000 barrels a day are still gushing into the sea, this oil spill has become the biggest in the history of the world. This will have a great environmental effect for decades to come. Another tragedy of this oil spill is that hurricane season is fast approaching and experts say this could cause the oil to spread even wider and further then it currently is. It will end up costing, us American billions of dollars to rehabilitate the waters and sea life affected by this massive spill. The generations that follow will not only learn from this very tragic event but will hope be able to, someday, remove all traces of this disaster from the environment.

This is a nicely written article. Last semester I wrote my final Ethics paper on this disaster. The explosion that caused this mess was cause by a methane bubble. This bubble expanded up into the drill until it reached the surface and caught fire. The survey team made the biggest mistake, but thought the risk was marginal. This was the part that always upset me the most beside the environmental damage and loss of life. Good article.
ReplyDeleteI, actually it is Sara Hall not Hill, but I liked our article inasmuch as it is what is happening right now. However, I am getting rather annoyed at the fact that "we" are putting forth very little effort to stop the barage of oil pumped into a gulf that I love very much. I've walked along the coast and collected shells on the beaches. It's really very sad.
ReplyDeleteFirst of all I would like to tell you that this is a great subject and the content you had was astonishing. It really opened my eyes on the disaster. Next, I would like to give you some tips. These are not meant to be taken as being critical, but as being helpful in the long run. I appologize if it sounds that way. I could not distinguish between the introduction and the body paragraph. I don't know if you all meant it or if it was due to the blog, but it's just something I noticed. A couple of sentences might have sounded more smoothly if they were combined into compound sentences.
ReplyDeleteI think this is very true, yet very sad. I think this happens no matter what field/operation you are in. I have seen things be ignored by supervisors in sales and even worse, the health care field. I think for those of us whom are supervisors sometimes suffer worse when things happen because even though we have reported it to our supervisors, someone in the middle fails to resport and than when something terrible happens it comes back down on us even though we did report it. I think communication is key and taking your job serious is also a key. I think for people who dont really care about their jobs, just the money, they sometimes just let things go because they dont care and dont see what could truly happen until it does. Very great topic!
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed reading this paragraph you all had collectively written. I must agree with BJCTS4 I was having a difficult time distinguishing where the intro ended and transferred into the paragraph. The beginning got me hooked into the material and I could not take my eyes off until the paragraph concluded. Thank you for bringing this to my attention.
ReplyDeleteGood content, but it seems like there's only one paragraph here instead of two. The assignment was to write an introduction AND a body paragraph, and I really only see a body paragraph here. Where is the introduction? I'm not sure.
